Barry Harwick Dartmouth track coach runs top program

Barry Harwick used to own the Dartmouth College record for the mile. He ran the event in four minutes, 9.1 seconds in 1977, his senior year at this Ivy League school.

Since then, his record has been eclipsed a number of times thanks to his coaching abilities. Harwick is the men’s cross country and track coach at his alma mater.

Lydia’s Place and the host Western Pennsylvania Track Club came away the big winners in the Pittsylvania 5K Classic on October 15 at Highland Park.

Race chair Mary Harwick reports that the race netted $1,000 for Lydia’s Place to use for its work with the female inmates at the Allegheny County Jail.

Dominic Wyzomirski and Erin Imler gave West Penn a sweep of the races. And the hosts won six team titles: three each by the men and women.

Dominic toured the three-loop course in a quick 16:52, but he needed a kick to post a two second win over teammate Carl Hubel. West Penners claimed five of the top six spots.

Erin ran 20:48 for a convincing win over teammates Suzanne Swan and Sharon Rutherford. West Penners claimed eight of the first 10 spots.

FINISH LINE

Judge John G. Brosky–former Pitt XC and track star–started the races.

Wiley and Jan Bucey–along with children Jon, Sally, and Jimmy–ranked as the family with the most participants.

Dick Firsching, Mt. Lebanon’s 1945 PIAA 220-yard gold medallist, led the runners over the course by biking.

West Penn had the youngest and oldest runners in five-year-old Katie Harwick and eighty-year-old Fran Albaugh.

Dave Sobal–winner of the 50-54 division–designed the popular three-loop course.

West Penn’s Steve Gonzalez and Katelyn Fleishman swept the Jerry Richey Mile races at the Pittsylvania Mile Run on June 29 at Carnegie Mellon University.
